I was sitting in Coffee Nero, Bebek, Istanbul and thinking about the interior design of the place since it is classy and different, while just starring at the library. I told myself these books were probably fake or bought from second hand stores with kilos (In Turkey, they buy second hand books with kilos from the owner, although you would have precious ones). I picked up one with hard cover, the name was ‘The Cola Wars’ by J.C. Louis and Harvey Yazijian.
I glanced through the book, first checked the year. It was written in October, 1980. 40 years ago by the publisher Everest House. The book focuses on the story of the global battle between the Coca-Cola company and Pepci Co. Inc. The book wasn’t the fake one and even not a white elephant or just a book with cover. I smiled!
There is a detail attracted my attention; Coke, 1980, switched from sugar to high-fructose corn syrup.
The lifestyle is a trend look good on health. Coca-cola used to be a trend in my childhood memories, different then now, with limited consumption. The eating habits has changed or shifted from healthier to packed food with limited nutrition. We, now, are far away from nutrition based diet and try to find a way or solution to eat less and active more. Soda companies with high percentage of corn syrups are not the one, let’s say, criminal, but one of them. From the marketing side, the battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is a dream case study for the last century.
Mainly Coca-cola company following with Pepsi Co. Inc. spend their research expenditures on studies which are supporting active lifestyle matters to decrease obesity and there is no relation between sodas with corn syrup and increasing obesity for the last four decades. I do not want to point out obesity since this is the main health related topic after Covid-19, but I did. There are so many studies (Government supported organisations or universities) have identified sodas as key contributors to chronic health conditions such as type-2 diabetes, obesities, coronary diseases, etc.
From now on, obesity crisis would grow faster; World Health Organisation, Health Ministries of Countries, Public and Private Insurance companies, all of them points exactly obesity as the main reason of death caused by Covid-19.
There are lots of questions, inquiries, problems, issues to address the soda companies related to corn syrup usage. And while sitting in the coffee shop, I wrote lots of questions about our health issues, politics, studies, government health bodies, private drug companies and more. This is not a Netflix documentary abstract, a real issue about high fructose corn syrup.
